tempo

This little widget will measure the tempo of a song or anything you tap into it. Tempo measures beats in music per minute, so you can play a song and tap right onto Tempo. It can tell you the measurement and if it is correct by displaying green for correct measurements and red for incorrect or inaccurate measurements. Once you find an accurate measurement with a song, you can double click on the numbers to set the tempo in iTunes. How is this helpful? If you write music and plan to write a song in a particular tempo like another song you’ve heard, you can find out the exact measurement. This can also be handy for students just starting out with music theory.

bonobos bongos

Consider this an online memory game of “Simon” except replace the plastic lights and computer hum sounds with 3D bonobo chimps and their bongos. Bono or Bado (I’m not sure what his name is!), the chimp on the left, will play a rhythm for you on his bongos. You, the cute guy on the right, have to mimick the exact rhythm that he just played. Click on the bongo to make the sounds. If you mimick correctly, you’ll know by the reaction of the bonobos. If you’ve played incorrectly, you’ll get an obvious thumbs down (or a shake of the head). You’ll continue until you have to go back to work. :-)

lilypond

The inspiration for LilyPond came when two befriended musicians got annoyed with the bland and boring look of computer print-out. Every musician prefers reading beautiful music, so couldn’t we programmers solve that printing problem?

LilyPond just does that: it prints music in the best traditions of classical engraving with minimum fuss. Don’t waste time on tuning spacing, moving around symbols, or shaping slurs.

Dijjer is free P2P software that dramatically reduces the bandwidth needed to host large files.

Bandwidth is a problem for anyone hosting big files. As soon as your music, mp3 blog, or movie gets too popular, either your site goes down or you get hit with a huge bandwidth bill. Worse, the cost and hassle of distributing large media files means that the internet isn’t living up to its potential as a democratic medium. Dijjer solves this problem. What distinguishes it from similar P2P tools (like Bittorrent) is how easy it is to use for publishers and users.

podserve

from podserve:
PodServe gives you a place to upload, host, promote and share your podcast. PodServe makes it easy to start creating podcasts – if you can record an mp3 PodServe will do the rest. Also available are social podcasting and public podcasting.

Social podcasting basically allows you to invite one or more people to join your podcasting effort. For example, had Lincoln and Douglas had access to our Social Podcasting service they could have each added shows or episodes for each of their speeches without the need to coordinate their activities. They would just upload their mp3 to PodServ and subscribers would receive each show or episode automatically. Or lets say you have a ten member book club located across the globe reading ‘long tail’ books like Headhunting in the Solomon Islands. You can create a Social podcast for the club, inviting each member to upload their thoughts into the podcast. Each member would subscribe and by the end of the month (hopefully) everyone has read the book and listened to each others thoughts on it. Social podcasts can be either moderated or un-moderated.

Public podcasting – add a show or episode to your public podcast. Pick a ‘long tail’ topic or subject and let release your podcast into the wild and see what happens. Pick a ‘head of the tail’ topic and watch it explode. Sort of like a public chat room. Public podcasts can be moderated, but why would you do that to yourself?
